Log-normal statistics in e-mail communication patterns

چکیده
(Dated: May 25, 2006) Abstract Following up on Barabási’s recent letter to Nature [435, 207–211 (2005)], we systematically investigate the time series of e-mail usage for 3,188 users at a university. We focus on two quantities for each user: the time interval between consecutively sent e-mails (interevent time), and the time interval between when a user sends an e-mail and when a recipient sends an e-mail back to the original sender (waiting time). We perform a standard Bayesian model selection analysis that demonstrates that the interevent times are welldescribed by a single log-normal while the waiting times are better described by the superposition of two log-normals. Our analysis rejects the possibility that either measure could be described by truncated powerlaw distributions with exponent α ≃ 1. We also critically evaluate the priority queuing model proposed by Barabási to describe the distribution of the waiting times. We show that neither the assumptions nor the predictions of the model are plausible, and conclude that a theoretical description of human e-mail communication patterns remains an open problem.

Center for Wireless Communications, University of California San Diego, 9500 Gilman Dr. La Jolla, CA 92093-0407, USA – fax: +1-619-534-2486 – e-mail: [email protected] Abstract— In this paper, we provide a general analytical framework for the computation of the interference statistics in mobile radio cellular systems. This approach, which takes into account log-normal shadowing, distance path ...

Given a transmitter that radiates an electromagnetic light field, we assume that the resulting field at the plane of the receiver aperture is log-normal with some coherence properties. Various representations of the field a r e discussed: aperture sampling, plane-wave decomposition, and Karhunen-Logve expansion. The statistical properties of the coefficients in these representations a r e inves...
متن کاملIncremental adaptive networks implemented by free space optical (FSO) communication
The aim of this paper is to fully analyze the effects of free space optical (FSO) communication links on the estimation performance of the adaptive incremental networks. The FSO links in this paper are described with two turbulence models namely the Log-normal and Gamma-Gamma distributions. In order to investigate the impact of these models we produced the link coefficients using these distribu...
متن کاملOn universality in human correspondence activity.
The identification and modeling of patterns of human activity have important ramifications for applications ranging from predicting disease spread to optimizing resource allocation. Because of its relevance and availability, written correspondence provides a powerful proxy for studying human activity. One school of thought is that human correspondence is driven by responses to received correspo...
